Ben Suzuki Olive
Ben Suzuki, our club founder, rescued this tree from the General George Patton family olive orchard in the 1940s. Ben asked permission to dig it up. The General’s sister said it was only one month from being plowed under so he could take it, free. Ben then trained and maintained it until his death. Our club now cares for it and displays it, on occasion.
Purpose:
The South Coast Bonsai Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to:
• Providing an educational atmosphere in which to study the art of Bonsai.
• Educating and informing the public about Bonsai culture and training.
• Providing general information about Bonsai and other related horticultural activities.
• Encouraging a wider appreciation of the art of Bonsai.
Monthly Newsletter:
Notification of meetings and other upcoming events, helpful hints on Bonsai, and other information of interest to Bonsai enthusiasts.
We welcome submissions to the newsletter… comments on presenters, good suppliers, photos of events and ideas for other members. An e-mail to Carol Upston is the best way to get stuff to us.
Annual Bonsai Show:
Opportunity to show members' trees in a non-judgmental setting and see what others are doing in this unique field of art. Our annual show is the weekend before Memorial Day in May, at the South Coast Botanic Gardens.
Membership:
Open to anyone interested in bonsai or penjing training, showing, maintenance or simply enjoyment. To apply, please complete our Membership Application Form.
Monthly Meetings:
Usually the 4th Sunday of each month at 10:00 AM in Classroom A, at the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 90274. Meetings include demonstrations by experts in Bonsai, workshops, field trips, access to the club’s extensive library, and the friendly exchange of ideas with others interested in Bonsai.
Effective March, 2010, SCBA’s Wednesday classes at the South Coast Botanic Garden have been cancelled – our main instructors, Carol Upston and Ken Ueda have been leading these for years, and both need and deserve a break.
We encourage beginners or anyone wanting some help to bring their trees to the Sunday meetings or contact Carol (jackdraw@earthlink.net) or Ken (uedak@sbcglobal.net) directly to schedule some one-on-one time.
Affiliation:
Our club is a member of the Golden State Bonsai Federation.
